Hunchback is a clone of the Century arcade game of the same name. It was written by John Dyson, one of the founders of Superior Software and released in 1983. It was quickly followed by a court injunction from Century, preventing further sales, although they soon entered into a license agreement with Superior, with Century receiving some payment for copies sold.

Hunchback is about as good a copy of the arcade game on the BBC as you could get, and certainly very tidy for a 1983 product. Your quest is to run Quasimodo along several sections of wall in order to reach the tower in which Esmerelda is imprisoned. At the end of each section of wall is a bell which you ring to end the level - and score any bonus points remaining on the timer. Each section of wall is more difficult than the one before, with increasingly difficult hazards to negotiate. These include rocks and arrows, soldiers, a rope swing and eventually combinations of these. Timing is everything in a game like this and this version is particularly unforgiving on the jumps - you almost have to be pixel perfect from where you leap.

This game was very popular at the time, and I remember this version on the school BBC Micro getting played a lot. It was quite a nostalgia hit to play it again! The graphics are bright and colourful, and Quasimodo runs and jumps smoothly (though the wall scrolling between sections is a little jerky). Sound is a little sparse, mainly just running, jumping and falling noises and there is no in-game tune. Gameplay is generally solid, although the precision needed on jumps can be frustrating at times. Definitely work a look, this one, and with 13 wall sections (selectable at the start) and 3 skill levels, there is plenty to keep the Hunchback fan occupied.

This run was made on the 12th July 2026 using the Pantheon emulator on PC. Skill 1 was selected (easiest) and wall section A (the very beginning). The final score reached was 1,020 points.
