Xenon III: The Genesis Probe is an arcade game for the Oric 48K. It was released in 1985 by IJK and written by the enigmatic WUN, whose real identity has never been determined.
Xenon III is the third game in the Xenon trilogy, with part one being Xenon 1 and part two being Zorgon's Revenge. As a result of the wars in the first two games, the planet Radon has suffered so much damage to its ecosystem, that life needs to be boosted by collecting animals from nearby planets. Your mission is to visit six planets and collect animals, like some sort of cosmic Noah's Ark, and bring them back to Radon.
The game is essentially a collection of minigames, including the hyperspace jump where you must balance the power of your craft within a narrow zone to enable the jump. The minigames are very well programmed for a 1985 Oric game. One of the games clearly has Centipede as an inspiration and another has a maze gate switching mechanic that reminded me of Lady Bug. Xenon III takes a bit of a more pacifist nature to the gameplay compared to the other members of the Xenon series, and the change of pace may be enjoyed by some, but not suit others.
The graphics and sound are definitely at the better end for the Oric, with plenty of animation on the various aliens and theme tunes playing on the levels. This is quite a different type of arcade game than the usual fair, which makes for an interesting experience, but fans of all out blasters may wish to get their fix elsewhere. Personally, I find this game enjoyable, but difficult.
