Blitz (also known as Blitz 16) is a port of the Commodore VIC-20 game for the Commodore 16 / Plus 4. It was released in 1984 by Commodore and written by Simon Taylor. It appeared on a compilation tape called Stellar Wars & Blitz.
The game is a version of the 'Bomber' or 'Blitz' genre, where you have to flatten a city so that you can land safely. Why the decision to destroy a whole city just for your benefit is beyond my understanding! The game is basically identical to the VIC version, other than the graphics are a little more detailed with a wider city to destroy. The graphics and sound are very simple and your only control is the space bar to drop a bomb, of which you can only have one on screen at a time. Clear all the buildings and you get to do it all over again.
This is a very simple game and versions were commonplace on many earlier machines. A lot of home computer early adopters experienced it as one of the games they would have played, so even today it does a have a little nostalgia value for some of us. That being said, by the time the C16 was released, this game was a bit 'old hat' and it would only really have been justified as a pack-in title with the machine itself. Selling it separately, even as part of a compilation with another game was a bit cheeky! Your Commodore reviewed the package in their May 1985 issue, giving it just two out of five stars, and that was mostly for the other title on the tape, Stellar Wars.
This run was made on the 27th April 2025. There are no gameplay options and the final score was 549 points.
Time stamps:
00:30 Title screen.
00:35 Game start.
03:57 Last building cleared.
04:20 Landing and first frame complete.
04:41 Second frame starts.
07:21 Collision with building. Game Over! Final score 549 points.
