Mr. Munchee is a Pacman clone for the ZX81 with 16K RAM expansion. It was released in 1983 by IPS (International Publishing & Software) in Canada, a country you would not normally associate with the ZX81. The game was written by Greg Brooks, who also wrote Speed Snake and Wrath of Kong for the ZX81.

The game is a version of Pacman, with most of the features of the arcade game. There are three ghosts, power pellets and a cherry that appears near the ghost spawn point. The escape tunnels are at the top and bottom of the screen. The game features three different mazes as well. There is no sound of course, as the ZX81 did not have this feature without adding additional hardware.

This would have been a good version of Pacman for the ZX81 in 1983, in fact it would have been one of the best. It is pretty fast-paced and the ghosts are quite good at hunting you down. The power pills do not last long and you get almost no warning when they are going to run out so chasing ghosts for points can be very dangerous. I do like the way the ghosts eyes change to asterisks when they are on the run though. The animation of your Pacman is well done too.

This is definitely one of the best Pacman games on the ZX81, and if you are curious about trying out this old machine and its games, this is one to put on your list.

This game was played on the 6th April 2025 using the EightyOne emulator on PC. The score reached was 5,640 points.
