The beginning Invaders section is my fav. Imagen Space Invaders but your ship can also go up and down like Centipede and with the speed and control of computer mouse precision.
Its one game that demonstrates how 5200 is really different. It actually needs a 5200 controller, or analog joystick. A thumbstick wouldn't work because of its small and over sensitive range. I imagen a Trakball working but game manual doesn't mention it being an option.
There's a bunch of horrid reviews about this game and it's control. I've determined there are 3 issue reasons this is.
1. Your controller needs to be in good condition so it moves smooth like it's meant to. Over time it seems many of these controllers have gone jagged. Meaning they'll still work for something like Qix but fail miserably in Gorf/Missile Command.
Mark's Classic Gameroom review for Missile Command 5200 is blahh.. he gave it a bad review just because his controller was broke. He had access to many controllers, how is it my few seem to move fine?
2. The boot. Games that need to center don't center enough, and games that need no centering center too much!
The 5200 boot is better than no boot for games like Pole Position "and most of the library". It tries to center but doesn't do the best job.. But these small handful of games like Gorf, Star Wars Arcade, Super Breakout, Kaboom, Missile Command that take advantage of this 360 mouse control need absolutely no centering.
The 5200 boot makes the controller feel stiff and awkward for these kind of games that need free range. The only way I'll play is with a torn boot like the one I used on this, or Wico with centering turned off. The Wico is a bit overly loose so I highly recommend a torn standard. The gears the stick is hooked into feel great, not to firm not too loose. Once the boot is torn or taken off it completely changes the experience. After some practice I now prefer it over the paddle to Breakout. It was that darn boot messin ppl up!
3. People may just suck at it. It takes a steady hand and fast reflex to do well.
The A800 version has the control more people are accustom too. But I imagen it's too slow for the faster levels. The Lazer stage moves incredibly fast and I don't think a digital controller could keep up. I would bet you never see any A800 records above my 5200. There's a major difference between relative and absolute control.
In conclusion: this game, as well as others that benefit from the control type, have made 5200 a top system for me. I understand where Atari was going and why they put all their money on this being the future.
More plays to come. My new goal 100,000 .. I'm over half way there.
