Jungle Jive is an arcade game for the BBC Microcomputer. It was written by Dennis Ibbotson and released by Virgin Games in 1984. Dennis also wrote Bugs on the Virgin label for the BBC, a Centipede-type game. An earlier one of his was Super-7 by the little-known software house DACC - a collection of seven simple games for the BBC Micro.
An unusual couple of game mechanics feature in this. The plot has you are traversing a jungle when you realise you are surrounded by deadly wild animals. Armed only with your rifle, you must shoot all the creatures except the baboons. The baboons are just as deadly as all the other animals if you touch them, but for some reason if you shoot them all, you lose. Maybe it's a fellow anthropoid thing.
Your man can only move up and down, though he can wrap around the screen at top and bottom. Your shots on the other hand only go left or right. It is important to be accurate as any misses will ricochet off the side of the screen. These ricochets may hit creatures (useful) or the baboons (not so good) or can even hit you (worst of all options). Clear all the main creatures on the screen and it is on to the next level with different animals. Each level has its own feature animal - elephants, rhino, crocodiles and so on. There is also an indestructible blue creature (shots bounce off it) which might be a hippo? Your final annoyance is the snake which wanders across your path. You can shoot it (which isn't easy) but any contact is fatal. And speaking of contact, you need to watch out for staying in contact with any animal that has just killed you - it can easily immediately kill you again resulting in stun-locking and Game Over!
This is an odd little shooter. The ability to only move up and down in a central column reminded me of Turmoil for the Atari 8-bit computers from Sirius Software. I recall playing Jungle Jive at a friend's house when we were kids and we found it very difficult, but fun. Playing it now, it starts off hard for your first plays, but as you get used to the gameplay and how to avoid ricochets and deal with the snake, it turns into a 'just one more go' shooter. It's always annoying when you lose a life and especially when you lose a few in one go, but somehow you just press start and go again. Dangerous this one - has the potential to be very addictive! Lots of graphical and sound activity - perfectly good enough for the game without being outstanding. I do like the way your character kneels down to take his shots, though I don't think the baboons look anything like baboons!
