Baby Monty is a game for the BBC Micro. It is based on a type-in listing for the Commodore 64 of the same name that appeared in the August 1984 issue of Personal Computer Games magazine. The C64 version was written by Tony Crowther (author of Blagger and Wanted: Monty Mole). The BBC conversion was by James Byrne (Terrormolinos and in 1993, Zool for the Acorn Archimedes). The game appeared on a book and tape package from Century Communications called "PCW Games Collection for the BBC Micro". I don't think this version appeared as a type-in in a magazine, though it is included in both the book and tape.
This BASIC program is a play on Gremlin Graphics Monty Mole games. Baby Monty has fallen off a shelf at Gremlin Graphics and fallen into a deep cavern. As the water rises, he uses an old row boat he has found to float up to the top of the screen. Collision with anything other than the exit causes a loss of a life and barrels are falling from an old video game (Donkey Kong!). Make it to the top and you get to do it again on another level (up to a maximum of 15). There is no end, so Baby Monty never escapes....
The water rises constantly, but by using the 'Shift' key, you can make it rise a little faster. Not only does this speed up a fairly mundane game, but it also has an important role in your barrel avoiding strategy. As a magazine type-in, this is just a bit of fun and not too serious a game. It is repetitive and not fast paced, so it won't hold your interest for very long at all. There are 15 selectable skill levels - which mainly influences how many barrels fall.
This run was made on the 14th June 2026 using the Pantheon emulator on PC. Level 15 was selected and the score reached was 16,500 points.
