Aifox is an unreleased game for the Oric 48K. It was written by brothers Jean Michel Bunouf and Jean Marc Bunouf in 1988. It went unreleased as they could not find a publisher - they had approached Loriciels for example who turned it done. By 1988 the Oric had fallen out of favour and publishers could not afford to release software for a shrinking market. It is fortunate that it survived to today. Some online sources list the game as being released by A&F, but this is not correct.
Airfox is a Scramble-genre game, but with a helicopter, which makes it more like Scramble's successor, Super Cobra. I recently played a port of Super Cobra on the Entex Adventure Vision, so I can see the similarity in style between Airfox and the original arcade game. Your helicopter has to fly through a number of caverns, attacking enemy installations and avoiding their return fire. Your fuel is constantly running down, so like in Scramble, you need to shoot the fuel tanks to replenish your supply.
The caverns are very narrow and the enemy anti-aircraft guns are quite brutal - very difficult to get by, and best avoided if possible. The missiles that are also fired are not too bad. This is a hard game, I couldn't get far and did not even manage to get my name on the High Scores, which start at just 500 points. There is plenty of sound and the graphics are bright and colourful. They do move in character blocks though (Severn's Lone Raider on the Oric was similar) so movement is quite blocky and with the tight caverns and enemy fire, this really ramps up the difficulty. I also struggled to be able to move and fire at times, so negotiating areas packed with enemies becomes almost impossible.
This is almost an excellent game, but unfortunately the difficulty and issues with the movement and controls put it just the wrong side of the line. This is one Oric game I'd like to see get the 'Redux' treatment as it has a lot of potential to be superb - it's so close!
This run was made on the 4th May 2026. The game was played on an Oric Atmos 48K using the Oricutron emulator. There are no adjustable skill levels and the final score was 470 points.
