Bombyx is an arcade game in the Snake genre for the Oric 48K. It was released in 1984 by Dialog Informatique and written by Francois Lionet.

Bombyx (which is a type of moth and a term used in French that can be interpreted roughly as Caterpillar) is a version of the classic Snake game where you move around the screen eating fruit and veg and getting ever longer. You can't afford to take your time, because if you take too long to eat the objects, more appear and the number of edibles you need to consume to get to the next level increases. It's quite possible to fill up the screen with your body if you are not quick enough! Collide with yourself or the walls and you lose a life. Once you have eaten enough, a hole opens in the wall at the top of the screen and you can try to escape to the next level. As the levels progress, the screen fills with obstacles and later on bouncing balls start to appear which are deadly to collide with.

As Snake games go this is perfectly acceptable. The game is decently put together and controls well, but in the end it is just another basic Snake game at heart. As such a common genre, it's been seen by retrogamers many times before and there is little new to interest them here. It's quite fast paced, so the challenge is there and I did find the bouncing balls on higher levels both an interesting and frustrating addition - I've not seen that mechanic before.

This game was played using an Oric Atmos 48K emulated in Oricutron. The date of play was the 12th April 2026 and the skill level selected was 10 (a medium difficulty setting).
