Stanley is an arcade game for the Thomson MO5 computer. It was released by Loriciels in 1984. The author is Carlo Perconti (who went on to work on Soulfighter on Dreamcast and Burning Road on PlayStation among many others). The game was also available on the Oric, by the same author.

Stanley is a cucumber. For reasons unknown, he has to stack discs on six columns. This is done by climbing to the top of the screen and pulling the switch. This releases either a red disc or a blue disc. Stack the required number of discs and it is on to the next level. Blue discs can wipe out your red discs, unless they intercept an enemy on the way down, whereby they turn red.

Your enemies are weird too, and all of them are deadly to the touch. Along the top level marches Puck, who is apparently an indestructible flea. He makes reaching the switches more difficult. The other enemies will chase you on the columns and discs - they can be crushed by bringing a disc down on their heads. These are Droid (a humanoid robot), Gluzz (another cucumber who is Stanley's sworn enemy) and Schmoll (not sure what this ceature is!). All the enemies hate each other as well as Stanley, so you may find they kill each other rather than go after Stanley.

This is a weird game (very French!) that is quite original. The closest mechanic I can think of in other games is Burger Time, as dropping the discs is similar to dropping the burger elements in that game.

The graphics in this game are simple but very nicely done. It really does feel like a game straight out of the arcades and brought into the home. It is quite clear who each character is and they have their own little animations. Sound is ok too, with the noise of Stanley's feet being ever present, along with descending noises as discs are sent downwards, and kill noises as you crush your enemies (and see them driven before you and hear the lamentation of the women). There is also speech included at times, but I'm not always sure what it is saying. The controllability is good and Stanley is very responsive to your inputs.

This is a unique little arcade game for the Thomson and Oric machines. It plays well, has decent graphics and sound and is fun to play. It offers a decent challenge at default levels, but the game parameters can be adjusted to your liking. I love finding games like this - good little games, that are not really widely known. A secret little gem, worth some minutes of your time even today.

This run was made on the 29th March 2026. The game was played on a Thomson MO5, using the DCMOTO emulator. The game parameters were left at default and the final score was 3,045 points.

Time Stamps:
00:30 Title screen and options. No parameters were changed, leaving the skill level at default.
00:37 Game start - with speech! I believe it says "Niveau Trois" or in English, "Level 3", which is the default skill level.
01:38 First life lost - got too close to Puck.
01:59 An example of your enemies fighting - Droid is destroyed by Puck.
04:11 Second life lost - if you move sideways into a higher pile of discs then you lose a life.
06:01 Four discs on each pile, level complete.
06:31 Phase 2 begins.
06:42 All the bad guys end up in a scrap and kill each other.
09:21 Third life lost. Game Over! Final score 3,045 points.
09:28 Initials entry and High Score table. I think the speech says "High Score", but I'm not sure.
