Stairrunner is a level-climbing game for the Commodore PET. The game was released by Revival Studios in 2013, including a physical release on cassette tape. It was written by Martijn Wenting. The game is also available for the VIC-20 and Sinclair ZX81.
Wizzy's latest spell has gone wrong! Instead of casting a successful elevation spell, he has instead made all the lifts in local buildings have a mind of their own. If he can reach the top of each building, he can get the lifts back under control. The game has a well-tested theme, resembling games like Spy's Demise for the Apple II.
In the style of Revival's other games, this is another well executed, technically competent game with a simple mechanic at its heart. Climb up the levels by running from one side to the other while avoiding the lifts. Each screen has its own lift pattern, so the game is a type of action puzzler. You only have one life, so don't make any mistakes.
Graphics on the PET are tricky to work with, and these are nicely done within the machine's capabilities. The PET was intended for business and education, not games. The machines sound capabilities are also limited, and in this game, there are just beeps when the lifts hit the bottom of the shafts. Most importantly for a game like this, control is responsive.
You can find the game, along with several others, on Revival Studios itch.io page here:
