Bobo is a minigame compilation released by Infogrames across a number of computers of the time. This version is for the Thomson TO8 / TO9 and MO6 series - it won't run on the earlier TO7 or MO5 series. It was released in 1988.

Bobo is a game based on the well-known Franco-Belgian comic strip hero who has been jailed for stealing a bike. Bobo is famous for his many failed escape attempts and daily prison activities, and these inspire the stages of the game. While most versions of this game feature five or six stages, the Thomson version has only three.

In the first stage, you are trying to keep the floor of a hallway clean of footprints. Prisoners and guards enter and exit from various doors in the hallway, and there is also a dog with filthy feet as well. The second stage has Bobo helping the other prisoners escape using a trampoline. Bobo must move the trampoline left and right so that the prisoners can bounce over the wall to freedom. This level is very reminiscent of the Nintendo Game and Watch handheld called Fire! The final screen features Bobo's turn to escape and somehow, he has managed to climb onto the electric wires leading from the prisoner. He has to dodge the electric sparks travelling along the wires by jumping from wire to wire.

Although there are only three minigames in this version, they are well done considering the 8-bit hardware, but obviously not as good as the 16-bit versions. The graphics are very colourful, with a resolution of 320x200 pixels and 16 colours. They capture the feel of a comic strip very well, although they are not completely smooth, they are good enough not to ruin the gameplay. The trampoline scene is nicely animated in particular. Sound is sparse and not really a feature of this title. Gameplay is ok, if a little sluggish - this is running on a 1MHz 8-bit processor after all. I can imagine that once the novelty wears off, the slowness could start to bother you though.

I enjoyed trying out this title for a while. I'm not very familiar with the Thomson or its capabilities, but I was surprised at how visually attractive it is. Obviously, it cannot compete with the new 16-bit rivals in the form of the Amiga and Atari ST, but it holds up well for a machine with such a long heritage. The first TO machine appeared in 1982, so is contemporary with the UK's BBC Micro, and in fact they both have a similar backstory, development pattern and lifetime. I've come to think of the TO/MO series as the closest thing to a French BBC Micro. Worth a try this one, despite the sluggishness in play - it's an interesting title to experience on such venerable hardware.

This run was made on the 1st March 2026. The game has no skill levels and was played on a Thomson TO8, using the DCMOTO emulator. The final score was 2,704 points.
