Gridrunner is a version of the classic Llamasoft game originally written by Jeff Minter for the VIC-20 in 1982. This version by Milasoft is for the Grand-Daddy of all the Commodore machines, the Commodore PET. It was released in 2022. If you have the Colour PET modifications to your real or emulated PET, you can enjoy the game in colour too.
Gridrunner is inspired in many ways by the Atari arcade game Centipede. Centipede-like enemies known as Gridsearch Squads head down from the top of the screen in exactly the same way as the Centipedes in Atari's game. That is where the similarities end though, as there are no mushrooms or other garden inhabitants. Instead, when you shoot a Squad piece, a timed pod appears and if it reaches zero, an indestructible bomb falls down the screen at speed - keep out of the way! As well as these, there are two X-Y Zappers that travel along the Grid's edges. One periodically fires energy bolts straight up and the other flings pods onto the playfield. Keeping an eye on where these X-Y Zappers are is a key to survival.
If you destroy all the Squad pieces, the level ends and it is on to the next one. Gridrunner was always a very challenging take on the Centipede genre and this PET version is no different. I always struggle to keep an eye on the dreaded X-Y Zappers. Controlling your ship is easy though, and it is responsive to the controls. Your rate of fire is decent, and this game is, quite literally, an absolute blast on the PET. You don't see many crazy shooters like this and bringing this classic to a mid-70s machine was a stroke of genius. This is thoroughly recommended game for the PET, and if you want to try it you can find it on Milasoft's itch.io page here:
