Leap-Frog is a version of the arcade game Frogger for the BBC Micro. It was released in 1983 by IJK Software and written by Barrie Cridland. Barrie produced several games for IJK, including Stratobomber, Invaders and 3D Maze for the BBC Micro, as well as Probe 3 and Invaders for the Oric-1 / Atmos.
This version of the game follows the arcade game closely. First you have to get your frog across a five-lane road, then a river filled with logs and turtles. Leaping from the last line of logs into a vacant hole in the opposite riverbank is your final challenge. Fill all five holes in the riverbank and you move on to the next level which is harder.
The graphics in this one are very colourful and nicely detailed. It can be difficult to see your frog on the river section as it blends in with the turtles and logs. This was a particular problem for me as I have slight red/green colour-blindness so trying to see the frog amongst all the red, yellow and green colours was hard! Your frog is not animated, just a fixed shape that moves in character steps, but to be honest, this did not detract from the game when playing. The various types of traffic on the road and river almost move smoothly, just a small amount of jerkiness, but again, this didn't seem to have a negative impact on gameplay. The large frog faces in the homes are nicely done, as are the deadly parrots and bonus butterflies that appear here on later levels. A snake appears on the path between the road and river from Level 2 onwards, this is also not animated.
Sound is suitably well done. Once the game loads, a short version of "Row your boat" is played while you are asked for instructions. Your frog makes the traditional jumping sound whenever he moves, and a brief jingle is played when you land in a hole. A splat noise is played when you die. A short tune plays at the beginning of the game and between levels. Just enough to fill the space without being too long to be annoying.
The gameplay itself is fine. The frog controls ok to key responses, though space on the road and river can be very tight at times. Beyond the difficulties with colour clash on the river, I didn't have any problems or complaints here. The game allows you to start from any of the 7 levels (Level 0 to Level 6) so you can tailor the difficulty to meet your ability. Most Frogger's on the Beeb make you start at the beginning, so this is a nice addition for the expert player.
Another relatively early game for the BBC and a well done one too. This may not be as polished as Acornsoft's Hopper, but it is a bright and colourful version of Frogger which would have satisfied the BBC owner of the time. Maybe not the best BBC Frogger, but certainly in the runners up places. Having played a few of Barrie's other games, I can recognise his style of bright, colourful and relatively large graphics, which were a hallmark of his work.
