Gakken's Donkey Angler dedicated handheld LCD game was released in 1982. It is clearly inspired by Nintendo's Game and Watch series which began with 'Ball' in 1980. It even features the two difficulty levels of Game A and Game B.
The game features an angler with three rods in the water. Fish will swim up to the hooks and your angler has to get to the position in time to catch them. If you don't, the fish eats the bait and you lose one of your three lives. You are not given much time before the fish eats the bait, so you'll be flying from one side of the screen to the other.
Controls are simple, just left and right, as your angler will automatically pull out the rod if a fish is attached. There are two difficulty levels with Game A being the easiest and Game B being faster, with more fish, features fish that change their mind and circle around and finally a crab that appears and snips your line.
A simple game, much like all the LCD games of this type. Probably what sets this one apart is the speed of play - even with Game A, the pace can be quite fast.
This run was made using Itizso’s RetroFab project. This can be found on itch.io and the simulation runs in your browser. Not only is the emulation spot on, but the game unit, box and instructions are beautifully recreated in the simulation.
This game is played using Game A, the easiest. The date of play was the 7th December 2025 and the final score was 47 points.
Time stamps:
00:30 Game start, Game A selected.
00:53 First life lost.
01:46 Second life lost.
02:12 Third life lost. Game Over! Final score 47 points.
