Tutankham by Parker Brothers is the official home version of the 1982 Konami arcade game. The VIC-20 version was released in 1983, as an 8K cartridge.
The home version for the VIC-20 follows the arcade game closely. Your character has discovered the tomb of King Tutankhamun and is intent of finding and stealing the treasure inside. To do so they will have to make their way through the maze-like passages, finding treasures, keys and maps. The passages are filled with enemies that will kill the player on contact. You can fire horizontally, but not vertically, to destroy these enemies, but they quickly respawn. You also have a limited number of 'smart bombs' in the form of flash bombs. these clear all the enemy on screen in one go. You can only carry one key at a time, so as the levels progress there will be an increasing amount of backwards and forwards travel in order to be able to unlock the path to your progress.
The VIC version of Tutankhamun has a smart look. The passages do look like they are inside an old Egyptian tomb and set the scene nicely. The enemies are well detailed, so overall the games visual design captures the theme. There is plenty of sound as well - your footsteps and your gun fire follow you through the passages and short tunes play when you collect items or die. I don't have any complaints about the graphics and sound.
The secret passages between parts of the maze work well and are easy to use. However, I did find movement in general to be a little tricky. The enemies are interesting. I am not sure why you face off against Dodo's initially - I did wonder if they were pelicans, but apparently, they are vultures! The bats and snakes are much more recognisable. These enemies do appear in large numbers, and the control issues make dodging or killing them troublesome.
As mentioned, the character was not that easy to control, especially when trying to shoot or move vertically. I also found I could not stop accidentally using my smart bombs, rendering them practically useless as a gameplay element. Overall, I found the control issues a detraction from the gameplay and that was a shame as I ended up walking away from this one sooner than I would have liked. Maybe more practice is needed on my part as the basic game concept and execution seems ok. If the controls 'click' for you, then I think you would enjoy this one a lot.
