Jungle Journey is an arcade game for the Acorn Atom released in November 2012 by Retro Software. This is a port of the Acorn Electron game released in 2011, which was written by David Boddie. The Electron version will also run on the BBC Micro. The port to the Atom was made by Kees van Oss. An upgraded Acorn Atom is needed as the game requires 32K RAM plus a Colour Board for the colour graphics.
In Jungle Journey you have to escape from the jungle, by finding a locked door located somewhere on the map. Before you can enter the door though, you must find the key. This is a flick-screen game spread over quite a large map of 11 x 11 rooms and is inspired by games like Sabre Wulf and Atic Atac. If you know those games, you will be at home here. The jungle is inhabited by creatures that are best avoided, though you can kill them with one of four weapons that you have on each of the four levels of the game. Each of these has slightly different properties. The game deliberately does not go into detail about the weapons so you will have to work out their abilities yourself.
On each screen, there is also an object. In most rooms this is one of the types of collectible treasure. The two exceptions are the room with the key and the room with the cave. Once collected, items do not respawn and this can be used to determine if you have visited a room previously or not. It's a nice gameplay mechanic that means you will not get quite as lost as you would in Sabre Wulf or Atic Atac. I certainly appreciated it while playing. Most items give you just points, but a few will boost your strength as well.
Should you find the key and the exit, you go to the next level. This features new enemies and new weapons and characteristics in the maze. The fourth level is the last and if you can find the cave, you escape the jungle and are free. One final word of caution about fire weapons though. These can be used to clear away parts of the jungle to gain access to closed off areas, but beware, this weapon only has a limited number of shots and if you leave the screen and go back you could find yourself trapped by the jungle that has regrown!
David Boddie has created an excellent game for the Electron and the port to the Atom by Kees van Oss is equally as good. The graphics on the Atom are not bad, needing to be converted due to the different screen mode size of the Atom. This has been done well. The restrictions of the Atom colour palette Set 1 do make the game look a bit garish compared to the Electron original, but there is nothing that can be done about that - it would look worse with the only alternative which is Set 2. Another standout feature of the game is the SID soundtrack that plays in the background during play. Close your eyes and you could be on a C64!
Overall I liked this game a lot. It is not too difficult (at least to start with, it gets harder as you progress) and I feel the game is completable for most players without needing to become an expert. In my own run, I got trapped and ran out of play-time so just let my remaining strength be used up to make the game end. If I had the key at this point, I would have completed the game - so close!
