Birds of Prey is a Galaxian-style game for the Acorn Electron. It was released by Romik Software in 1984, based on the original version they made for the BBC a year earlier. Both versions were written by Clive Webster.

Birds of Prey is another take on the Galaxians theme and as such the formula is tried and tested. The small enemies flap their wings in a large formation above you. Unlike the original Galaxians, they can fire from their formation positions. Occasionally one or more will swoop down towards you in one of two ways. Some will follow the traditional pattern of diving down and disappearing off the bottom of the screen, only to reappear back at the top. Others will start a circling motion just above your laser base. A final type of enemy are the Death Bombs. These fall in a straight line, but if you fail to shoot them, you will lose a life if they reach the bottom of the screen. You have three lives with which to get as far as you can and attain the highest score. An extra life is awarded after every four screens are cleared.

The graphics on this shooter are quite small, but this does allow for quite a bit of game space onscreen for the action to happen. It can also make the birds quite hard to hit as well, especially when they are circling lower down the screen - where they are dangerously close to you. Sound is relatively simple too, but there is always something making a noise, so it is suitable for this kind of game. The addition of the circling birds and the Death Bombs and four difficulty levels to choose from add a bit of variety to what would otherwise have been just another Galaxians clone. Reviews of the game at the time were mixed, which seemed to depend on how tired of the Galaxians formula the reviewer was by that point in time. And I would agree, whether you like this game or not depends on how much you still enjoy the Galaxians formula.

This run was made on the 1st June 2025, using the Pantheon emulator on PC. The level chosen was 1 (the easiest) and the score reached was 21,010 points.
