Bump 'n' Jump is a home version of the arcade game of the same name, which was released by Data East in 1982. The Intellivision port was released in 1983 by Mattel with the game being coded by Technology Associates, a small outfit consisting of Joe Jacobs and Dennis Clark.

The Intellivision version is as close to a clone of the arcade machine as you could hope to get. You control a car that has to make its way to the end of a number of courses, each one named after a season of the year. Other vehicles are on the course and these can be avoided or bumped into to knock them sideways. If you can knock them into a collision, you gain a number of points, but you need to be careful as you will also be bounced off in the opposite direction and could crash as well. There are several different types of vehicle on the road and they each have their own characteristics. For example, the bulldozer-type vehicles are hardly moved by a collision and the trucks dump their load on the road which will cost you a life if you collide with it. Collisions with cars also need care - if you hit them from behind you lose speed and that could stop you jumping when you need to. You can gain speed by hitting them while you are ahead.

The car is also capable of performing a 'Knight Rider' type of jump as long as your speed is over 100 mph. This can get you out of trouble in a tight spot and is essential for clearing some of the water obstacles. Landing on enemy cars also scores points. The water hazards are a particularly troublesome obstacle. Some have bridges on the left side which you can use if you are careful, but you may be forced to jump at some locations and sometimes you will need to land on an island in the water and jump again.

Completion of a course results in a bonus multiplied by the number of cars you destroyed. If you destroyed no cars, then you are awarded an exceptional bonus of 50,000 points. It's then on to the next, harder, course. Here there are tighter roadways giving you less room to manoeuvre and less bridges over the water requiring you to carry out ever more hazardous jumps.

I have fond memories of the arcade game (which was sometimes called Burnin' Rubber) in a number of arcades when I was a kid. It was one of my favourites, though I was never any good at it. This home version is almost as perfect as you could want. The same tune is there and the car wobbles around in the same way it did in the arcade game. Gameplay is spot on. This has to be one of the best conversions of an arcade game to the Intellivision, and is of the standard you might expect from a modern day homebrew project. That this game was released back in 1983, without the aid of 40 years of experience with the machine and access to modern coding tools, makes the programmers work all the more impressive.

This run was made on the 16th June 2024 using the Pantheon emulator on PC. There are no adjustable skill levels and the final score reached was 58,968 points.

Time stamps:
00:30 Impressive animated title screen.
00:38 Player number selection.
00:44 Game start.
01:26 First water jump.
01:47 Second water hazard, this time I use the bridge. I fail to negotiate the ground on the other side though..... you either need to jump again, or slow right down to negotiate this bit.
01:51 First life lost.
02:25 Third water hazard.
02:46 Fourth water hazard - an easy jump to finish on.
02:50 First season complete. As zero cars were destroyed, I am awarded the extra bonus of 50,000 points.
03:00 Spring season begins (roadway 2).
03:08 Second life lost.
03:21 A jump which results in destroying another car - the 50,000 point bonus is now not possible for this level.
03:28 Note the lorries now dump deadly black stuff on the roadway.
04:38 Third life lost. At high speed it is harder to time your jump and the risk of crashing off the end of the road into the water is increased.
04:58 Spring complete. 8 cars destroyed at 400 bonus points each.
05:08 Summer (roadway 3) begins.
05:44 Fourth life lost.
06:17 Fifth life lost.
06:34 Sixth life lost. Game Over! Final Score 58,968 points.
