Ferry is a simple reaction game for the ZX81 with 16K RAM expansion. It appeared as a type-in listing in the October 1982 edition of Sinclair User. It was written by Michael Simmonds.
The display shows one port at the top and three at the bottom. One point is awarded for each round trip and an extra ship once all the cargo - 12 loads - is transported successfully. Control the ferry with keys 5 and 8, and do not go back to an emptied quay.
This is a very simple game (only 55 lines of BASIC!) and typical of many type-in programs of the time. I kid you not that this sort of thing was exciting back at the time - being able to control things at all on a screen was revolutionary, especially being able to do so in your home and to type in the listing yourself. These are the initial sparks that eventually led to the worldwide gaming industry of today! This game seems to have crashed once the score got to 25. Maybe I suffered a virtual equivalent of rampack wobble?
This game was played on the 29th March 2025 using the Pantheon emulator on PC. There are no skill levels and the final score was 25 points.
Time stamps:
00:30 Game starts.
00:39 First life lost.
02:38 Last cargo delivered, start of a new level, extra life awarded.
03:20 Second life lost.
04:45 Last cargo delivered, start of a new level, extra life awarded.
04:56 Third life lost.
05:31 Game crashes. Final score displayed, 25 points.
