Meteoric Shower is a fixed-shooter arcade game for the ColecoVision written by Bit Corp and released in 1983.

The game consists mainly of elements of Space Invaders and Galaxians. You have to shoot waves of aliens that appear above you, but the twist in this game is that they can also appear below you and travel from the top of the screen to the bottom and vice versa. Likewise, your ship can flip to shoot downwards as well as firing upwards. This is quite a novel approach as I don't recall seeing this mechanic before. The game features four skill levels and the option of single or two player games.

The alien graphics are small and simple, but colourful and generally move smoothly. Sound is also basic, but perfectly adequate for the game. Controls are responsive and I had no complaints about the handling of my craft and it flips swiftly from shooting up to shooting down. Each screen has a different layout of aliens. You'll certainly have your hands full keeping an eye out for both the aliens and their bullets appearing from below as well as above.

In summary, this is quite a simple shooter, you might even say it was crude in it's delivery. However, the slightly unusual gameplay does set it apart from most games in this genre. This makes it of interest to try, even if it only for a little while.

Interestingly, this was the built in game for a console known as the Dina. I had never heard of this machine before coming across this game, but the Dina was a ColecoVision and Sega SG-1000 compatible console from Bit Corp of Taiwan, featuring two cartridge slots - one for the ColecoVision and one for the SG-1000.

This run was made on the 27th December 2024 using the Pantheon emulator on PC. The games was played using Skill Level 1 and the final score was 13,050 points.
