Brick Blasta is a 2022 game by Marcel Lansing for the Commodore PET. He has also produced a C64 version of the game.
In the authors own words, Brick Blasta is a blend of Breakout and Arkanoid and I couldn't describe it any better than the programmer himself. As well as destroying the walls, there are also the Arkanoid-style drops to collect. There are four in this game:
P = More points.
M = Magnet - holds the ball on your bat until you release it.
S = Size - makes the bat larger and smaller.
F = Fast - makes the bat move faster.
The laser shooting had also been originally planned, but the author moved on to other projects before this was implemented.
A classically simple PET game of Breakout, the item drops make it stand out amongst other PET games in this genre. The graphics and sound are relatively simple, as you would expect in PET world, but the gameplay is there and this would have been rated fairly well if it had been released 40 years ago compared to similar Breakout games. I particularly appreciated the fact that the ball changes trajectory after several bounces, otherwise it could well have been impossible to get the last few bricks - a flaw that is all too common in games like this, but not this one. It isn't all that easy to position your bat precisely as it moves quite quickly, but other than that, the controls are ok.
This run was made on the 17th December 2024 using the VICE emulator on PC at 60Hz. There are no options and the final score was 1,110 points - I just could not get that last brick!
