Car Race II is an overhead-view racing game from the PET User's Club. This was Commodores the official user group for the PET, so games released here could be considered official Commodore releases. The game was published in 1980 and written by the future CEO of Nintendo, Satoru Iwata. This was his first widely published game, the start of an illustrious career.
The game is a simple overhead racer, with a look reminiscent of Taito's 1974 arcade machine Speed Race. Starting off track on the right side of the screen, you have to drive your car as far as possible in the time limit allowed. Colliding with the side of the track or other cars will cause you to have to restart from the side of the track, though you can crash as many times as you like. The game ends when the time runs out.
The controls are quite simple, left, right and accelerate. You slow down automatically if you release the accelerate button. There is not a lot of space on track and the other cars are quite difficult to avoid as theya re very large. You'll be crashing and having to get going from the trackside again quite a lot of the time. There is also an icy section (the Slip Zone) to tackle - good luck steering at all in this section! You can pick up speed in the off-track area before entering the race track, but you don't score any points while you are there.
A very early PET game and a little piece of gaming history.
This run was made on the 17th December 2024 using the VICE emulator on PC. There are no adjustable skill levels. The score achieved was 1,057 points.
Time stamps:
00:30 Title screen.
00:35 Game begins.
01:01 First Slip Zone coming up.
02:04 Time up! Game Over! Final score 1,057 points.
