1942 is a 1984 vertically scrolling shooter arcade game by Capcom. It is being played here as part of the Capcom Arcade Stadium on PC. The game was incredibly popular at the time and a could be found in almost all Western arcades. The game was ported to many formats and the series remains popular to this day.

The game is similar to Capcom's slightly earlier title Vulgus, their first released game. In this game however, the setting is loosely based on history. Set in a mythical version of the Pacific theatre of World War 2, the player flies a P-38 Lightning (which did not operate off aircraft carriers in reality) against what feels like the entire Japanese Naval and Land Air Forces. Your aim is to make it through 32 stages of action, getting ever closer to the Japanese homeland.

Many of the aircraft encountered are based on real-world aircraft of the time, including both the jet and rocket aircraft you encounter. The game is notable for the occasional appearances of larger aircraft and also the small squadrons of red aircraft that drop POW collectibles if destroyed. These can provide a number of bonuses when collected depending on their colour. Probably the favourite of these is the one that adds two fighters that fly off your wings, increasing your firepower and shielding you somewhat from enemy fire. Another feature that is well remembered is the ability to use a limited number of rolls to get out of a tight situation. These temporarily lift you above the playfield to avoid enemies and shots, but beware, as when you renter the playfield you can fly straight into trouble again!

An absolute classic that is still often played today. Later incarnations of the series improved on everything, but there is something special about the very first incarnation in the series. To me it has the right amount of variety and gameplay without getting overcomplicated.

This run was made using Capcom Arcade Stadium on PC (Steam). The date of play was the1st December 2024. The final score was 68,730 points.
