Atari 50: The Anniversary Celebration is just that, a celebration of 50 years of Atari. Although there have been many Atari game compilations over the years, this one is the best yet, lovingly put together with many documents and features within it. It's like visiting an interactive museum.

Canyon Bomber was released in 1979 for the Atari VCS / 2600. It was written by David Crane (Kaboom! and Pitfall!) and based on the 1977 arcade game of the same name.

The VCS version of the game adds colour (the arcade original was black and white) and several game variations.

The primary principle of the game is for you and an opposing aircraft to try to clear blocks that are filling a canyon. The aircrafts flight is set, you just have to decide when to drop the bombs. The more blocks you destroy, the more points you score, but as the canyon empties it gets harder to hit the remaining blocks. Any bomb that misses counts against you and you only have a limited number of misses allowed before it is game over. The game is similar in concept to Breakout, blended with Blitz.

In this set of runs, 3 of the 8 games on the cartridge are played:

Game 1: Canyon Bomber, Single player vs the computer. The game is over for a player once they reach six misses. Final score was 250 points.

Game 3: Canyon Bomber, Single player vs the computer. Similar to Game 1, except the bricks no longer fall to the bottom of the screen but remain in place. The game is over for a player once they reach six misses. Final score was 242 points.

Game 7: Sea Bomber, Single player vs the computer. Drop bombs on shipping underneath you. The bomb explodes at the level of the dotted line which you move up and down. Quite a tricky game to get to grips with. The game ends when either player reached 1,000 points. Final score was 400 points.

This set of runs was played using the Steam version of Atari 50: The Anniversary Celebration on PC. The date of play was the 10th November 2024.

Time stamps:
00:30 Start of Canyon Bomber Game 1 section (blocks fall to bottom of canyon).
00:35 Setting game options. The game variation is set to 1. The difficulty switches have no effect.
01:06 Game start. Player aircraft is yellow. The easiest way to tell is that the computer (red aircraft) fires continuously, while the human one takes time to aim between shots.
02:14 Last miss allowed. Game Over! Final score 250 points.
