2048 a block-sliding game from 2014, originally written in Javascript by Gabrielle Cirulli. As the game is simple and addictive, it has been 'ported' to many platforms and is well suited to 8-bit machines, even those with limited abilities. This Jupiter Ace version was written by 'Slogger' and released as Public Domain in 2015. It requires a 16K RAM expansion.

Numbers appear on a grid, starting with 2. You can slide all the blocks on-screen up / down / left / right. All blocks move together and will fill in any blank spaces they move to. If two of the numbers are the same, they merge into each other - so a 2 and a 2 colliding creates a 4. You keep doing this, to build up the numbers - but a new 2 is added to the screen each move, so you have to combine similar numbers to make room. If the grid fills up completely it is game over. Your score is incremented when numbers merge, with the bigger numbers giving you bigger scores.

This game is very simple, yet is ridiculously addictive. It seems to be the same formula that makes Sudoku popular, a simple premise that pulls you in for more.

This run was made using the EightyOne emulator on PC. The date of play was the 14th July 2024. There are no skill levels and the score reached was 3,280 points.
