Guntus is an arcade game for the BBC Micro, amongst others. The program was written by Inufuto as part of a multiplatform project that uses a common format for producing the games and a machine specific interpreter/library for making the main program run on that specific machine. This allows one core program to be relatively quickly adapted and ported to a range of machines. It's an incredible project, as is the number of machines supported.

This game is a version of Galaga. You have complete freedom of the screen with your ship but take care of the aliens which have their own attack patterns. Although each wave is similar, each also has its own different entry and form up routine. So, stay alert and be quick to keep away from edges where a stream of aliens could appear and take one of your lives.

Game play is fine, there is the inevitable block movement / jerkiness that happens with the game engine used. In most Inufuto games, this is not much of an issue, but in games like this one it is slightly more significant than the more common platform / puzzle games produced so far. It is also quite hard to see the bullets at times against the starry background, so be ready to lose the odd life in that way. Personally, I didn't find any of the negatives annoying compared to the pleasure of seeing a core of a game being available on many different platforms, all displaying their own flavour unique to the machine they are being played on. I've played a few of the versions of Guntus now and this is one of the trickier ones to do well at. Sound is the usual tunes and effects of this game engine, functional but not amazing.

This run was made on the 1st July 2024 using the BeebEm emulator on PC. The final score was 7,700.

Time stamps:
00:30 Title screen.
00:35 Game start
02:30 First life lost.
03:00 Second life lost.
04:31 Third life lost. A classic example of why to keep away from the screen edges at the start of a wave! Game Over! Final score 7,700 points.
