Alpha Mission is a 1985 vertically scrolling shooter arcade game by SNK. It was originally released in Japan under the name ASO - Armored Scrum Object. It is being played here as part of the SNK 40th Anniversary Collection on PC.

The game borrows heavily from the Xevious genre in terms of gameplay. Aerial and ground-based objects attack you just like that game. Your basic ship can be upgraded by collecting coloured letters which appear, especially after destroying some ground installations. These upgrades are what makes the game special. The three basic ones are [S]peed, [L]aser and [M]issile. These upgrade the associated function on your craft. There are a few others as well and watch out for the brown 'downgrades' which remove your powerups.

Collecting [E] adds energy to your bar. This is used to activate bigger upgrades that are obtained by finding parts scattered around the playfield. I haven't quite worked out all the details of these yet, but you can select any completed ones by moving left or right and pressing the secondary fire button to activate them. They run until the energy bar runs out and thena re discarded.

A fun shooter that brought some new things to the genre and I do remember playing this once on holiday in the 1980s. I didn't remember the name of the game, but I do remember the coloured powerup squares and the flame thrower!

This run was made using the SNK 40th Anniversary Collection on PC (Steam). The date of play was the 27th May 2024 on PC. The final score was 33,250 points.
