Dodgems is a version of the Sega/ Gremlin arcade hit Head-On. The arcade game was released in 1979, with this version being released for the Atom by Acornsoft in 1981 as part of Games Pack 6. The game was written by Neil Raine who went on to do some great arcade ports for the BBC Micro (Hopper, Meteors and Planetoid).

The game premise is simple, clear all the dots in the maze while avoiding the oncoming computer car. Controls are also easy to grasp, just left, right and a go faster button. Timing is key to survival and Herad-On is one of my least favourite game genres. I remember seeing the arcade game in many an arcade in the early eighties and not being keen on it then either. Despite my personal feelings towards this sort of game, this is a good port with smooth movement and good controllability. The enemies do not seem to increase in number with each new level (though I didn't get far), but the speed does increase. You only get one life too, so try not to take too many risks! If you like Head-On I can't see why you would not enjoy this version.

This run was made on the 9th March 2024. There are no skill settings to adjust, and the final score was 2,140 points.
