Galaxia is an arcade game for the Sinclair QL computer. There does not seem to be any information available online for who wrote it or when, or if it was a commercial release or a homebrew. The only piece on information I did find states that it originates in Australia, but this can't be correct because when I play the game in the UK, the graphics are the right way up.
The game is an intense and incredibly fast-paced take on the Galaxians theme. You are assaulted by wave after wave of deadly attackers. These can shoot you from their formation or when diving, so you are advised to keep out of the way! The aliens move incredibly fast, so this is a game for those with excellent reflexes. There is no pause when you lose a life either, it is straight on with the next one, so don't get caught taking a breather! The enemy formation resets in full every time you lose a life, so making it far up the levels will take a lot of skill and practice.
The game has a couple of other interesting features. You (and the aliens) can wrap around the screen edges. This can be helpful or disastrous - it all depends on what is happening on-screen! Your method of fire is also a little different. You can only have one bullet on screen at a time, but if you press fire, the on-screen bullet will disappear and be replaced by a new one. This is the same game mechanic as in Gorf and can be useful when dealing with enemies that are low down on the screen as you can produce a withering amount of fire. Patience is required however when dealing with the main formation or you may remove your bullet from the screen before it reaches an alien. Aliens in formation score 100 points. Diving ones score 100, 250 or 500 points.
The QL was never intended as a games machine, aimed more at the business and hobbyist markets. A few games were produced commercially and also as homebrews over the last 40 years. The speed of this game is dramatic and whether you like it or not depends on how much of a battle you enjoy! Although there is not much happening graphically, the aliens are nicely animated and there is always something happening in the sound department.
The summary:
Sparse, but nicely detailed and smooth graphics.
Simple but suitable sound.
Easy and responsive controls.
Very fast gameplay - whether this is a good or bad thing depends on your view on the game. The difficulty is, ultimately, the main appeal.
A no-frills, but intense, action game.
