Borderline is a little-known arcade game released by Sega in 1980 or 1981. A conversion for the Sega SG-1000 was carried out for Sega by legendary programming company Compile in 1983.

The game is a multi-stage run-and-gun shooter. The aim is for your armed jeep to infiltrate enemy territory and destroy some sort of factory facilities. In the first stage, the game is a vertically scrolling shooter - imagine the cave stage of Scramble turned through 90 degrees. Here, your jeep travels along a road, while enemies spring out from the sides. Collision with one of these or a wall costs you a life. The little red rocket things that appear throughout the levels restore some fuel as well as give you points.

The next stages are very similar and resemble more of a Dig-Dug type of game. Here you have to destroy nine facilities - these look like atoms - at the top of the screen. The facilities are protected by tanks and jeeps. You have to drive through the undergrowth to get to your objective. Both you and your opponents can shoot each other, but only down cleared pathways. This is very similar to the mechanic in games like Dig-Dug and Mr Do.

The third stage is similar to the second, but know you appear to be in a town or factory facility. There is no undergrowth, only walls which cannot be moved through or destroyed. This level is a little like Armor Attack without the helicopter. Again, you have to destroy the facilities at the top of the screen while being pursued by jeeps and tanks.

The fourth and final stage is a mix of the previous two. Here you must negotiate both the undergrowth and some walls to reach your objective. Tanks and jeeps will try to stop you again. The final facility is a single atom symbol, but this time it is protected by blue shields that you have to shoot away. The facility can also fire in several directions, so you have to watch out for those as well. If you can destroy it, it is back to stage 1 again but this time it is all harder than before and more enemies appear.

The game is very faithful to the arcade original, but unfortunately that was not a very interesting or successful game itself. I didn't find this console version particularly engrossing, despite the four levels of play. It doesn't help that the last three levels are very similar to each other. The first level of each round also seems to be the hardest, so the difficulty curve seems backwards. Graphics and sound are ok for an SG-1000 game, but nothing special. The game doesn't seem to do anything badly, it just does not have a very engaging theme or playability to it. It is interesting to see an early digging game mechanic on display - this was released before Dig-Dug and The Pit made the genre popular.

This run was made on the 31st December 2023, using Kega Fusion v3.64. There are no adjustable skill levels and the score reached was 31,500 points.
