Space Invaders is a 1985 game by Sega for their SG-1000 system. You win no awards for working out that this is a conversion of the 1979 Taito classic.
This is one of the best Space Invaders conversions on an 8-bit platform, capturing the original game nicely. It adds colour - the original was black and white, but that is the only real update. After all, with such a classic, what needs updating?
Graphics are nice and smooth, sound is suitable if sparse (like the original) and controllability is good. It even has the feature that the final Invader travels at different speeds when going from left to right thatn when it is going right to left. The only thing 'wrong' with this game is that by 1985, Space Invaders was well past it's prime, but if you want to play a game of Space Invaders, this is a version worth trying.
This run was made on the 18th November 2023, using Kega Fusion v3.64. There are no adjustable skill levels and the score reached was 4,070 points.
Time stamps:
00:30 Title screen. Even the Invader turning the letter Y the right way up is included.
00:41 Game start.
01:40 First life lost.
02:30 First screen cleared.
02:49 Extra life awarded for reaching 1,500 points.
03:15 Second life lost.
03:34 Third life lost.
04:15 Second screen cleared.
05:48 Third screen cleared.
06:27 Fourth life lost. Game Over! Final score 4,070 points.
