Exerion started life as a 1983 shooter from Jaleco in arcades. It was licensed to Taito for distribution in North America. It was ported to the SG-1000 console by Sega in 1984, on a 16K cartridge.

Exerion is a fairly standard shooter. Your craft is not restricted to the lower portion of the screen and instead can fly anywhere on the playfield. Waves of enemies descend from the top of the screen - there are six types, each with their own graphical style and attack pattern. Once all six 'scenes' are completed, the game loops around again, but the aliens are worth more points. An extra life is awarded at 10,000 points.

Although the game is fairly generic, it does have a couple of features to try and make it standout from the competition. The first is the scrolling landscape. This scrolls towards you, as well as side to side as you move left and right. Secondly, you have two types of shot. The first is a double shot, which fires quite slowly but is unlimited in supply. The second is a single shot, which fires much faster, making it possible to quickly take out waves of difficult aliens. You start the game with a limited supply of these (fifty), but gain one for each enemy craft you destroy. Saving these shots for the trickiest alien waves is key to success.

The final innovation is the most dramatic, your craft has significant inertia in its movement. Once you are moving in a direction, you can't just instantly change direction, first you have to overcome the momentum you have built up. At first, this is really tricky to get the hang of, but don't give up after playing just a few games. It is not long until you have got the hang of it and mastering it is satisfying in itself.

This run was made on the 24th September 2023, using Kega Fusion v3,64. There are no adjustable skill levels and the score reached was 132,000 points.

Time stamps:
