I'm really not sure how the difficulty effects the game, but it does make it easier to reach checkpoints, my score is higher on the easier setting. .. so may have to do with checkpoint time.
For fastest lap im not sure if there's much difference between the difficulties.
I had only requested difficulty be put on the points variations, but it ended up on the lap time variations as well. Which I'm actually kind of glad for since it made me play it extra and increased my skill per try. But yea.. not sure if lap time is effected by difficulty, at least when it comes to getting it on the 1st lap. If it takes the player longer the easier setting will allow for longer play.
Ok.. just read the manual. It says the difficulty determines how hard it is to complete a lap.
When you're an ultra mega pro like me it can be hard to say.
