Armor Attack is a port to the Vectrex of the 1980 Cinematronics arcade game of the same name. The original arcade machine was programmed by the late Tim Skelly. The Vectrex port was released in 1982 and is very close to the original in looks and gameplay.

Gameplay involves your anti-tank missile armed jeep driving around town of buildings, destroying enemy tanks while they also try to destroy you. Hit a tank once to immobilise it, but beware the turret will still be active. Hit it again to completely destroy it. The buildings block vehicle movement and also weapon fire. Use this to your advantage by using guerrilla tactics.

As well as the tanks, a helicopter also takes to the playfield. This is not hindered by the buildings and it will shoot you if it can. The buildings do block the weapons it fires though. Prioritise taking out this helicopter as not only is it dangerous, but shooting five of them awards an extra life.

The cartridge features three game modes:
Game 1 - The joystick controls you jeep and two buttons also allow you to fine tune the left and right movements. This makes precision aiming easier when shooting from behind cover.
Game 2 - As Game 1, but the precision aiming buttons are disabled making the game harder.
Game 3 - The buildings are invisible! They are still there though and function like in the normal game.

I enjoyed playing this game. I never saw the arcade game at the time, but I remember seeing it in a book I had (How To Master The Video Games by Tom Hirschfield) and wanting to play it. Now I have, or the Vectrex version at least.

This run was made using Retroarch 1.15.0 on PC running at 50 fps. The date was the 13th May 2023. Game 1 was played (the easiest game and best thought of as the default setting) and the score reached was 26,100 points.

Time stamps:
00:30 Game loaded.
00:41 Selecting options - 1 Player / Game 1 selected.
00:44 Game start.
02:16 First life lost.
03:22 Second life lost.
03:54 Third life lost.
04:49 Fourth life lost.
05:37 Fifth life lost.
06:00 Sixth life lost - be aware that colliding with tanks or their wrecks will cost you a life.
06:11 The tank at the bottom destroys itself. I am not sure why. Maybe it collided with the building or fired too close to it and was destroyed by the debris.
06:33 Seventh life lost. Game Over! Final score 26,100 points.
