Released for the 2600 / VCS in 1983, this port of the Atari arcade game for the home became an instant classic. The in-game graphics may not be the best - a limitation of the Atari hardware rather than the programmer's ability - but the gameplay is excellent. The complete set of enemies is here - Centipedes, Spiders, Fleas and the Scorpion. The game mechanics are also maintained and the Centipede will drop to the bottom of the screen if it touches a mushroom poisoned by the Centipede.

Programmed by David Payne (Vanguard on 2600) and Josh Littlefield (Ms Pac-man and Atari Video Cube on 2600), this is one of the best games for 2600. The title screen is particularly impressive, allowing the programmer's to show what they could do when not being hindered by the limitations of the hardware during play.

This run was played using the Steam version of Atari 50: The Anniversary Celebration on PC. The date of play was the 30th April 2023. The game mode was Standard Play - the only other option is "Childrens Version" which shows a teddy-bear icon in the score. The difficulty switches have no effect in this game. The final score was 29,192 points.

Atari 50: The Anniversary Celebration is just that, a celebration of 50 years of Atari. Although there have been many Atari game compilations over the years, this one is the best yet, lovingly put together with many documents and features within it. It's like visiting an interactive museum.
