I've just had a quick try with the mouse and it totally transforms the gameplay - so much easier to control!

There is an error in the title picture where it lists the score as 41,200. It should have been 41,220 (see end of video).
Akka Arrh is an unreleased video game from Atari from 1982. It was written by Mike Hally and Dave Ralston.
The game features a central cannon that must defend it self from enemies that attack from the edges. In this regard, gameplay is similar to games like Space Zap or parts of Cosmic Ark. Two playfields are used. In the first, the attackers come in from the edges of the screen in various waves and your cannon can shoot into the various areas that surround it. Any enemies that reach the centre enter your close range area. Press the Zoom button to move to the second playfield. Here enemies again move in from the edges and attempt to destroy the shield around the cannon and destroy the it. They also drop blocking devices around the screen to reduce the effectiveness of your shots. You can zoom between the two playfields at any time.
I found the game a little odd to play at first, but it soon settled in. Only 3 prototypes were built and used for testing and player reception. Feedback was not hugely positive and so the game was not put into production. I tend to agree with Atari's decision, though the use of large areas of bold colours is quite eye-catching and would have been very noticeable in the arcade.
This run was played using the Steam version of Atari 50: The Anniversary Celebration on PC. The date of play was the 30th April 2023. The final score was 41,220 points.
Atari 50: The Anniversary Celebration is just that, a celebration of 50 years of Atari. Although there have been many Atari game compilations over the years, this one is the best yet, lovingly put together with many documents and features within it. It's like visiting an interactive museum.
