Major Havoc is a vector graphics arcade game by Atari, released in 1983. It was created by Owen Rubin and Mark Cerny.

The game consists of three parts. The first is a fairly standard shooter level, where your craft comes under attack from a wave of alien craft. The second requires you to land on the alien mothership, similar to a basic version of Lunar Lander. The third is more interesting, in that you have to navigate a maze of corridors to destroy the reactor, then escape. Complete this last task and the game goes to the next level.

The game was not very popular - vector hardware was more expensive than the more usual raster scan screens. This made it expensive and the gameplay was not enticing enough to attract customers, unlike for example, the Star Wars cabinet.

From a technical viewpoint the game is well done however, and of some interest to the game historian. The Maze / Platform section in particular has some nice animation work on Major Havoc - especially when he bangs his head on the ceiling! Overall the graphics have such a Tron-like feel to them, which I really liked. The music is also quite good.

This run was played using the Steam version of Atari 50: The Anniversary Celebration on PC. The date of play was the 23rd April 2023. The final score was 34,407 points.

Atari 50: The Anniversary Celebration is just that, a celebration of 50 years of Atari. Although there have been many Atari game compilations over the years, this one is the best yet, lovingly put together with many documents and features within it. It's like visiting an interactive museum.
