Quantum is a 1982 video game released to the arcades by Atari, but created by GCC. It was programmed by Betty Ryan, with sound by Patty Goodson.
You use a trackball to surround quantum particles with your probe. The probe leaves a short tail, if you are able to complete an enclosure around a particle, it is destroyed and you gain points. If you are too slow with the track ball, the end of the trace will disappear and you won't complete an encirclement. Each new level adds extra particles and extra types of particles. Contact with a particle causes a loss of life. Particles eventually feature bonds between them which are also deadly to touch. The encirclement mechanic is similar to games such as Qix or Snake.
One very neat feature is that if you get the highest score, you get to write your name on screen using the trackball.
I had never heard of this game before seeing it here in Atari 50, let alone played it. It was a delightful experience and still holds up today. Playing with the mouse gives a good analogue of the trackball. This is a recommended, almost forgotten gem.
This run was played using the Steam version of Atari 50: The Anniversary Celebration on PC. The date of play was the 22nd April 2023. The final score was 30,840 points.
Atari 50: The Anniversary Celebration is just that, a celebration of 50 years of Atari. Although there have been many Atari game compilations over the years, this one is the best yet, lovingly put together with many documents and features within it. It's like visiting an interactive museum.
