1 missile base is definitely easier - you don't have to keep count of which one has what!

I love playing this for 5200 with the analog stick. Instant control simular to a trakball or mouse. Also has only 1 missile silo so it's easier to manage.

I'm terrible at the 2600 version because of the digital control.

Jaguar is also digital control.. but still having fun with it.

Missile Command was released by Atari in 1980. Created by Dave Theurer and Rich Adam, it follows the theme of total nuclear annihilation and your ultimately vain attempts to stop it. A cheery game! In the 1970s and 1980s, the threat of all-out nuclear war was very real, so the game was very topical.

You control three missile bases whose mission is to destroy the incoming missiles, satellites and bombers. You have to protect six cities as well as your missile bases. Lose all six cities and the game is lost. If a missile base is hit, any remaining missiles in it are lost. Don't go too mad firing your missiles either, as it is possible to use them all up and be defenceless for the rest of the wave. After each successful wave, the missile bases are restocked. If you score enough points, you will have one of your cities rebuilt - these are effectively your lives.

The original game used a trackball controller. This makes using a joystick potentially too slow. A mouse would be a better option, closer to the original concept. An absolute classic, it spawned many home conversions and adaptations, many of which featured the iconic game over screen - "The End".

This run was played using the Steam version of Atari Vault on PC. The date of play was the 8th April 2023. The final score was 9,355 - not far off getting a life back at 10,000.
