Atari did a decent job of Asteroids on the VCS / 2600. Coded by Brad Stewart, it features 66 variations on the cartridge, though for a single player it is really 32 plus a kids version. Variations include fast or slow asteroids, with or without UFO's and various defence techniques - Hyperspace, shields, flip-over or nothing. This gives the cartridge quite a lot of versatility.
Released in 1981 it was hit, despite not having vector graphics and the asteroids have quite a vertical movement bias.
This run was played on PC using the Stella emulator. The date of play was the 1st April 2023. The game variation was 4 and the difficulty switches were set to A. The final score was 13,940 points.
Time stamps:
00:30 In Stella, game loaded. NTSC / 60fps displayed at top left.
00:32 Selecting Game 4 (top left number). The 1 on the right indicates this is a single player variation.
00:35 Game properties shows the cartridge installed and the Difficulty switches both set to A..
00:46 Double checking Difficulty switches are in A position.
00:48 Game start.
01:31 First life lost.
02:53 Second Life lost.
03:09 Third life lost.
03:15 Fourth life lost, but luckily it takes me over 10,000 so I earn an extra life!
04:01 Fifth life lost. Game Over! Final score 13,940 points.
04:08 Checking Difficulty switches = A and cartridge identity.
