Steeplechase was a port of the 1975 arcade game of the same name. In the arcade game, up to six players could race their horses over the course, jumping the fences. A seventh horse was always controlled by the computer.
The port to the Atari VCS was released in 1980, created by Atari but released under the Sears label - hence the Tele-Games name on the packaging. In this version, up to four players can play, with any non-human horses being controlled by the computer. The game was intended for play with the paddle controllers.
Once the race starts, you press fire to jump the fence. There are different sizes of fence and using the paddle you can set how long a jump your horse will make. Long jumps can clear any fence, but shorter jumps are faster, so you'll have a quicker time - at the risks of more falls. The race ends once one horse reach the ends or the time maxes out at 3 minutes.
This game is surprisingly entertaining and if you can get a few friends to play with you, I can see this being a blast, especially after a few beers. It's very like the hurdles event in Track and Field.
This run was played on PC using the Atari Vault emulation package. The date of play was the 30th December 2022. The game variations is 1 (uniform hurdle spacing, poor computer players). The difficulty switches have no effect in this game. The final time 1 minute, 45 seconds.
Time stamps:
00:20 Game 1 selected (all 6 game variations are shown before the race).
00:34 Game start.
01:35 Crossing the line first in 1:45. Confirmation of time at top of screen and game used at bottom of screen.
