I use the thumb stick for flying and the dpad for walking.
I use pointer finger on X button to fire and left trigger for bombs/jumping.
The rate I need to fire is just too fast for my thumb, so I do it this way. Works well.
I choose the TTX brand knockoff controller for this since its face buttons are clickier than the Microsoft brand.
