Jumping Acrobats (P.T. Barnum's Acrobats in the USA) is an arcade game based on Exidy's 1977 game Circus. This version is for the Philips Videopac G7000 / Magnavox Odyssey 2 home console. It was released by Philips in 1981, with the USA version being released in 1982.
The game is a clone of Circus, the arcade game that inspired it, but features a few extra variations. The idea of the game is to control a see-saw onto which two acrobats bounce in turn, being catapulted into the air. In the air above them are three rows of balloons which they can pop for points. If an acrobat misses the see-saw and crashes to the ground, one of your ten lives is lost. Balloons are worth more the higher up the screen they are and a bonus is awarded every time you clear a full row (which is then replaced by another).
The game is best thought of as a development of Breakout. This version features several optional additions to the arcade game such as a barrier that blocks your acrobats midflight and a choice as to whether the balloons move or are stationery. There are also single or two player options.
Control is generally good, although the action is quite fast and it takes a while for you to get used to the speed of play. You'll have a lot of injured acrobats on your conscience before you manage to start getting decent scores! The fact the game gives you ten lives should be a clue as to how difficult it can be. The graphics are quite simple, as you would expect, but the little men are nicely animated. Sound is basic but adequate, and is livened up by reasonably clear speech at various times such as when you make a scoring run or miss the see-saw.
If you can get used to the speed of play, this is a simple, but fun game, with the variations adding a bit more longevity. Obviously this is a very old game now, but well executed and can be fun to play for a while - if a little infuriating!
