Star Force is a cockpit-shooter for the Commodore PET. It was released in 1979 by Astar International, but the author is not recorded other than as S.M. This is believed to be Satoshi Matsuoka, who also worked on NES games with Satoru Iwata at Nintendo. The date of release means that Mr Matsuoka would have been at school at the time, which makes the quality of this game all the more impressive.
In this game you have to shoot down as many Tie Fighters as possible within a time limit set by your fuel supply. When the fuel runs out the game ends. Shooting Tie Fighters gradually increases the 'Value' setting which is how many points you get for shooting each fighter. 80 points seems to be the maximum value. If you are shot, you do not die, but instead your 'Value' is reset back to 10 points, making it harder to get a Hi-score in the time available.
If you can hold a Tie Fighter in your sights for a short time, the computer will lock onto it, and it cannot escape. This does have a drawback however, as if the fighter fires back at you, it will hit you head on, resetting the scoring. Make sure you shoot any locked in fighter quickly! Your laser will also overheat (and quite quickly too), which discourages constant firing. If the laser does overheat, you will have to wait for it to cool down before you can fire again.
This is quite a nicely done game, especially for 1979. The graphics are well put together. The PET did not allow redefinable graphics, so games had to use the built-in character set of the PET, which meant some creativity and compromise was required. The successful illusion of being attacked by Tie Fighters in this game is therefore very well done.
